Alphabeat – ‘Fascination’

Alphabeat – ‘Fascination’

Soaring up the singles chart on downloads alone, Alphabeat’s scarily perky second single looks set to establish them as the biggest Danish band since, erm, Aqua. ‘Fascination’ hits you like a train with chirpy boy/girl vocals hollering away from the start, and never lets up for a second. Its irrepressible bounciness might have the whiff of Katrina and the Waves’ ‘Walking On Sunshine’, but we’re not letting that put us off – pop pickers will find it either unspeakably irritating or a cutesy treasure, and we’re plumping for the latter.

Shocking Pinks – ‘Emily’

Shocking Pinks – ‘Emily’

The nom de plume of New Zealander Nick Harte, Shocking Pinks stubbornly refuse to accept that music has moved on since the late ‘80s indie scene, whose prime movers stubbornly refused to believe that anything could be further advanced than the Beach Boys and The Velvet Underground. Hey, perhaps they were right, but ‘Emily’ isn’t the song to prove it. Earlier single ‘End of The World’ was a lo-fi joy, but while Harte has kept the sulky mumblings and fuzzy Mary Chain guitar here, he’s forgotten the tune.
